OLED expert to present new thermal management research
Forrest’s research looks at managing the temperature of OLED lighting devices, in order to protect the longevity of the luminaires.

He comments: ‘One of the things we’ve been looking at recently is thermal management. People have started to realise that LED bulbs can have a thermal management problem.

‘With OLEDs this issue is reduced because, as a distributed light source, the highest temperature point on a device will probably be only 30C or so. However, as the OLED’s temperature rises, it can have an impact on the device’s lifetime.

‘We’re looking at ensuring OLEDs are a truly cool light source – making a really small improvement in getting heat out to get very high intensity.’

Alongside thermal management, Forrest sees cost as one of the biggest barriers to OLED lighting’s success. While he has seen considerable improvements in the performance of OLED devices since beginning work on the technology in 1994, this commercial factor is proving more of a challenge.

He adds: ‘The price points are pretty challenging, though efficiency is high and colour quality is good.

‘Nobody has good cost data, and there are manufacturing challenges in making the technology cheap. These devices will initially have much higher costs though: and the substrate cost and processing can be lowered, but then you have yield issues.’

Nevertheless Forrest expects the OLED lighting industry to make commercial progress in the coming years, much as OLED displays have recently.

He comments: ‘OLED lighting will follow the same trajectory as displays – they will start with some boutique applications, gain experience and then move towards commoditised lighting.’

Beaverton student Valerie Ding to compete in national science fair competition
One day, during her usual diet of news and politics, Valerie Ding flipped through magazine pages about the rise of LED lights in televisions and computer monitors.

This could be the future of alternative energy, Ding thought.

“Basically, in everyday life I see this all around me, so I decided to go deeper,” said Ding, who lives in the Bethany area.

Ding, 14, turned her investigation into a physics project that earned her a national finalist slot in the first Broadcom MASTERS science fair competition for middle school students.

In October, she will travel for free to Washington, D.C. to compete against 29 students who were chosen from more than 6,000 students nationwide. For four days, they will present their winning science fair projects, tackle science problems in teams and vie for a grand prize of $25,000.

“It’s a great honor and a great learning experience to get this far,” Ding said.

The competition is the first research-based contest for middle school students, an age group that has far more science fair participants than their counterparts in elementary and high school, said Michele Glidden, director of science education programs at the Society for Science & the Public.

“We really felt that it was an important time for students to gain confidence and retain that interest, so that as they continue on into high school they consider pursuing science,” Glidden said.

Two other Oregon finalists will join Ding, who graduated this year from the Summa honors program at Meadow Park Middle School. Mahita Tovinkere, from Stoller Middle School, and Anirudh Jain, also from Meadow Park Middle School, were also top winners.

Ding said she enjoys reading about “obscure fields of science,” such as stories of particle physics in The Economist. She energetically rattled off words like “boron nitride” and “nano-technology.”

For her physics project, she studied how to make LED technology more efficient. Ding created a software program that calculated physical properties, such as the emitted color of light, made by certain LED materials.

“I wanted to find a way that would be pretty accurate in predicting what would really happen,” Ding said.
