A mixed bag for new QB
Ben Krebsbach was the first to admit that his first collegiate start yielded mixed results. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound sophomore quarterback helped get the St. John’s offense moving in the first half of Saturday afternoon’s 41-20 loss to Bethel at Clemens Stadium. The Johnnies scored two second-quarter touchdowns and led 14-13 at halftime. But twice in the third quarter, St. John’s had the ball inside the Royals’ 35-yard line and failed to pick up a first down — settling for a pair of field goals that tied the score 20-20. Then, with the game tied and the ball at the Bethel 33 in the fourth quarter, Krebsbach’s pass intended for senior Sam Pederson was intercepted by senior safety David Vavra to set up the Royals’ go-ahead touchdown.
“I had some good plays and some bad plays,Water Pumps News,” Krebsbach said. “There were plays I should have made a different read on and taken the easy completion like we talked about all week. But I didn’t do that.”The Benilde-St. Margaret’s graduate finished 7 of 16 passing for 84 yards — including a 22-yard touchdown pass to senior Brent Graboski. He also made some key plays with his feet, carrying the ball nine times for 47 yards. That mobility was a big part of why he started against the Royals over junior John Ries and sophomore Connor Bruns — the two quarterbacks who have seen the bulk of playing time for the Johnnies this season.
“He played well,” St. John’s coach John Gagliardi said. “He brings mobility. That was the biggest thing. We’re just trying everything we can think of and hoping we can make something work.”The fourth-quarter interception was one play Krebsbach was wishing he could have back afterward.“We had our play called and the offensive line gave me great time,” Krebsbach said. “I had like four or five seconds to throw. I could have taken the easy route and hit our tight end coming underneath. But I went to the wide receiver. I got hit after I threw so I didn’t see what happened. But I made the wrong choice there.”
